A food or beverage factory runs CIP cycles, pasteurizers, chillers and washdown on schedules that were set once, years ago, and rarely looked at since. Every one of them draws water and energy whether the line is running or not, and a monthly bill has no way of telling you which is which. Put permanent meters on the big consumers and those schedules become something you can see, argue about and change — usually without buying anything.
Clean-in-place is where most of it hides. A CIP recipe is a sequence of timers, and timers do not know whether the rinse has finished doing its job. A meter on the CIP supply gives you litres per cycle per circuit, which is the number a sanitation lead can actually work with: it makes a long rinse visible, it makes a leaking return valve obvious, and it tells you which of the five circuits is worth an afternoon of anyone’s time.
The same argument runs through the rest of the factory. Pasteurizer water keeps flowing between runs. Refrigeration head pressure climbs at constant load because a condenser is fouling. A cold room drifts at two in the morning with nobody in the building. None of that shows up on the bill as anything more than a slightly worse month, and all of it shows up in the data inside a week.
When you want the whole picture — every source, every end use, and everything unaccounted for — that is a water balance, and we build it from the meters. It is not a study that sits on a shelf: it is drawn from readings that keep arriving, so it is still true next quarter.
